Recoleta Cemetery

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Established in 1822 on the former orchards of Franciscan Recoleto monks, this walled necropolis mirrors the aristocratic ambitions of Argentina’s Golden Age. Beyond a grand Neoclassical entrance framed by soaring Doric columns, five hectares unfold into an intricate miniature city of over 4,500 above-ground mausoleums. The cobbled avenues form an open-air museum of European architectural revivalism, where Neo-Gothic spires, Art Nouveau flourishes, and sleek Art Deco obelisks jostle for prominence. Sculpted from imported Carrara marble and dark granite, weeping angels, stoic guardians, and bronze allegorical figures crown the vaults of Argentine presidents, military commanders, and literary giants. Wandering these shadowed alleys beneath the canopy of cypress trees, travelers encounter a captivating blend of solemn grandeur and haunting decay. Peering through tarnished wrought-iron gates reveals sunbeams cutting through fractured stained glass, illuminating lace-draped altars, velvet-covered caskets, and steep stone staircases descending into subterranean crypts. Deep within the stone grid, the quietest yet most magnetic draw remains the Duarte family pantheon. Here, tucked down an unadorned passage, visitors leave fresh flowers against bronze plaques commemorating Eva Perón, whose embalmed remains were laid to rest five meters underground in 1976 after decades of clandestine international exile.
