Red Pyramid

Cairo, Egypt

Commissioned around 2590 BCE by Pharaoh Sneferu of the Fourth Dynasty, the Red Pyramid at Dahshur represents antiquity’s triumphant leap from stepped terraces to the world’s first successful smooth-sided "true" pyramid. Rising 104 meters above the desert floor south of central Cairo, its distinctive rusty hue comes from iron-rich oxidized limestone blocks, laid bare centuries ago when medieval builders stripped away the gleaming white Tura casing. Having witnessed structural fissures compromise his nearby Bent Pyramid, Sneferu’s royal architects constructed this colossal tomb at a cautious 43-degree inclination, resulting in a squat, broad-shouldered silhouette that ranks as the third-largest pyramid ever built in Egypt. To experience its interior, travelers ascend an exterior wooden flight of stairs high on the northern face before descending a steep, cramped, 61-meter shaft that plunges deep into the monument's core. The dry desert air gives way to the pungent warmth of petrified stone and ancient dust as the passage opens into a trio of sequentially aligned antechambers. Inside, visitors stand dwarfed beneath breathtaking corbelled vaults that step inward like inverted staircases, soaring twelve meters overhead to distribute the crushing weight of the megalithic masonry. Free from the chaotic tourist throngs of Giza, one absorbs an eerie, unbroken silence, enclosed by millions of tons of stone that have stood undisturbed for over four millennia.
