Buddha Park

Vientiane, Laos

Conceived in 1958 by the mystic and sculptor Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, Xieng Khuan (Buddha Park) stands along the banks of the Mekong River outside Vientiane. Sulilat, who synthesized esoteric Buddhist philosophy with Hindu mythology, mobilized local disciples to cast more than two hundred statues out of raw, wire-reinforced concrete. Decades of monsoonal moisture have streaked the sculptures with dark patina and creeping moss, lending this mid-twentieth-century visionary ensemble the eerie gravity of an unearthed ancient ruin. Wandering the grassy clearing, visitors encounter an extraordinary pantheon dominated by a tranquil 40-meter-long reclining Buddha, flanked by depictions of Shiva, multi-armed deities, and Indra astride a three-headed elephant. The park's most striking oddity is a colossal, spherical monument resembling a gaping demon's head. Travelers step directly into the beast’s fanged mouth and navigate cramped, uneven stone stairwells that wind through internal chambers representing Hell, Earth, and Heaven. Emerging through an opening onto the crown of the pumpkin-like dome, one looks down over a surreal dreamscape of weathered stone, where mythic serpents and tangled deities gaze eternally into the humid Lao sky.
