Museum of the Future

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Rising 77 meters above Dubai’s financial corridor like an elliptical eye of polished silver, the Museum of the Future debuted on February 22, 2022, as an architectural manifesto conceived by Shaun Killa and engineered by Buro Happold. Built entirely without interior columns, this hollow torus utilizes parametric design to balance structural loads across an intricate steel diagrid. Its seamless exterior comprises 1,024 fire-rated stainless-steel panels—a deliberate nod to the number of bytes in a kilobyte—inscribed with the philosophical poetry of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Rendered in flowing Thuluth calligraphy by Emirati artist Mattar bin Lahej, these carved words double as floor-to-ceiling windows, casting shifting ribbons of daylight across a sterile, bone-white atrium. Crossing the threshold, travelers board a simulated space shuttle that rockets to the orbital station OSS Hope, set in the centennial year of 2071. The narrative path descends through multi-sensory chambers where ecology merges with speculative engineering: the Heal Institute mesmerizes with a luminous genetic vault of 2,400 suspended crystal cylinders, each laser-etched with the DNA codes of endangered fauna, while the muted chambers of Al Waha soothe the nervous system beneath soothing digital ripples and aromatic mist. Stepping out onto the open-air observation deck nested within the building’s central void, visitors stand directly inside the structural aperture, feeling the desert wind while framing Dubai’s hyper-modern skyline through the curve of sculpted steel.
