Dubai Fountain

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Unveiled in May 2009 as a centerpiece of Downtown Dubai, the Dubai Fountain was engineered by California-based WET Design, the firm responsible for the Fountains of Bellagio. Submerged within the 30-acre artificial Burj Khalifa Lake, the installation spans 275 meters in length and features a complex geometry of five concentric rings and two intersecting arcs. Its mechanical framework harnesses over 6,600 incandescent WET Superlights, 25 high-definition color projectors, and an array of high-pressure shooters. Among these, proprietary "Extreme Shooters" ignite with enough pneumatic force to blast 22,000 gallons of water 150 meters into the air—equivalent to a 50-story skyscraper—illuminated by a spectrum that can be seen from space. Standing along the waterfront promenade or crossing the lake aboard a motorized wooden *abra*, travelers feel the deep, chest-thumping percussion of underwater cannons before the spray even rises. Shows commence every half hour after sunset, translating sound into kinetic sculpture across a diverse musical repertoire ranging from Andrea Bocelli’s classical operatic anthems to contemporary Khaliji compositions by Hussain Al Jassmi. Plumes of water bend and sway in fluid choreography, catching amber beams that mirror against the polished glass of the neighboring Burj Khalifa, while the desert air carries a sudden, cool mist that settles over the cheering crowds gathered along the boardwalk.
