Tara River Canyon

Zabljak, Montenegro

Plunging 1,300 meters into the rugged limestone plateau of Durmitor National Park, this immense chasm cleaves the Montenegrin wilderness with sheer, pale-grey karst walls and ancient, virgin black pine groves. Standing along its precipice near Žabljak, travelers are enveloped by the roaring rush of the luminescent, mineral-rich turquoise river slicing through the shadowed depths below. The thin alpine air carries the sharp scent of damp pine needles and cold river spray as drifting mists momentarily veil the canyon floor, where Class III and IV whitewater rapids crash against polished boulders. Spanning the void stands the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, a monumental concrete feat of five soaring arches completed in 1940 under chief designer Mijat Trojanović. The span bears a harrowing wartime legacy: in 1942, Yugoslav Partisans tasked one of its original construction engineers, Lazar Jauković, with demolishing the central arch to sever the Italian Fascist army's supply route. Jauković successfully crippled the advance while keeping the overall structure intact, though he was subsequently captured and executed by Italian forces on the very span he helped construct. Walking across the 365-meter-long viaduct, suspended 172 meters above the riverbed, visitors gaze directly into the historic chasm where pristine hydrology and 20th-century geopolitical conflict meet.
