Sao Paulo Museum of Art

Sao Paulo, Brazil

Conceived by media magnate Assis Chateaubriand and Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) reshaped Avenida Paulista upon its inauguration in 1968. A radical monument of Brazilian Brutalism, the structure commands the boulevard through audacious engineering: a rectangular glass-and-concrete pavilion suspended between two colossal, scarlet-painted concrete portal frames. This design creates an astonishing 74-meter column-free plaza beneath the building. Standing under this shaded urban underbelly, travelers feel the dynamic thrum of the metropolis as skateboarders, artisans, and protesters claim the civic void, while the open horizon preserves unblocked views toward the downtown basin. Ascending into the upper gallery, Bo Bardi’s subversion of traditional museum spaces becomes immediately striking. Masterpieces spanning centuries—from European titans like Rembrandt, El Greco, and Cézanne to Brazilian modernists like Candido Portinari—do not hang against static perimeter walls. Instead, they appear to float within a sunlit, partition-free hall, mounted on Bo Bardi’s signature *cavaletes de cristal* (crystal easels) anchored into raw concrete cubes. Walking through this transparent forest of art, visitors encounter both the face and the raw, labeled canvas backs of world-renowned paintings, experiencing Latin America’s most encyclopedic Western art collection as an egalitarian, three-dimensional dialogue.
