Plaza Mayor, Trinidad

Trinidad, Cuba

Trinidad’s Plaza Mayor serves as an immaculate time capsule of Cuba’s nineteenth-century sugar boom, preserved almost entirely as it stood when the regional collapse of the sugar trade halted modernization in the 1850s. Encircled by river-stone cobblestones (*chinos pelados*), the public square showcases an ensemble of Spanish colonial and neoclassical architecture built on the fortunes of Valle de los Ingenios plantation barons. At its perimeter stands the canary-yellow Palacio Brunet, completed in 1808 and now home to the Museo Romántico, alongside the neoclassical Palacio Cantero. Anchoring the northeastern corner is the Iglesia Parroquial de la Santísima Trinidad, consecrated in 1892 to replace an earlier church razed by a hurricane, which preserves the revered eighteenth-century wooden Christ of the True Cross. Standing in the sunlit square, you navigate manicured garden parterres bordered by white cast-iron filigree fences and guarded by English-cast bronze whippet statues. The tropical heat radiates upward from baked terracotta pavers, mingling with the sharp clatter of horse hooves echoing off lime-washed pastel facades and intricate wrought-iron window grilles (*rejas*). As afternoon shadows stretch toward the bell tower, travelers gather on the broad stone staircase ascending to the Casa de la Música, where the rhythmic strumming of a *tres* guitar and the citrus-honey aroma of rum-laced *canchánchara* drift out across the open colonial courtyard.
