Green Lake, Goderdzi

Batumi, Georgia

Perched at 2,058 meters in the Arsiani Mountain Range of Upper Adjara, Green Lake (Mtsvane Tba) sits along the high-altitude transit corridor that historically linked the Black Sea port of Batumi to the interior valleys of Samtskhe-Javakheti. For centuries, these slopes served as summer grazing grounds (*yayla*) for Adjarian pastoralists, while the strategic Goderdzi Pass immediately to the south played a contested role during nineteenth-century border skirmishes between imperial Russian and Ottoman forces. Today, weathered notched-timber huts, or *oda*, still dot the surrounding plateaus, preserving a centuries-old seasonal transhumance tradition against a dramatic mountainous backdrop. The lake occupies a volcanic depression enveloped by dense stands of Nordmann fir and Oriental beech. Fed purely by subterranean springs and winter snowmelt, its water sustains no fish, leaving the surface extraordinarily clear and glassy. Suspended minerals interact with dense forest reflections to produce a striking, opaque jade hue that shifts in tone as mountain weather rolls in. Visitors standing on the shore feel the immediate bite of subalpine air and the scent of damp spruce resin, often watching thick plumes of mountain fog spill over the ridge lines to swallow the water’s edge in absolute silence.
