Machakhela National Park

Batumi, Georgia

Clinging to the jagged gorges south of Batumi along the Turkish frontier, Machakhela National Park preserves a storied bastion of Georgian craftsmanship and frontier resistance. Established in 2012, this enclave of primeval Colchic rainforest was long renowned for its 18th- and 19th-century blacksmiths, who forged the legendary *Machakhela* flintlock rifle—a prized weapon that defended the valley against Ottoman incursions and is commemorated today by a giant bronze hillside monument. Across the mist-choked ravine, single-span stone bridges commissioned during the 12th-century reign of Queen Tamar arch dramatically over the surging Machakhlistskali River, held intact by an ancient mortar mix of lime and egg. Visitors navigating the damp, switchbacking paths are enveloped by an emerald canopy of ancient chestnut, hornbeam, and endemic Pontic rhododendrons dripping with wild ivy. Crossing the narrow arch of the Tskhemlara bridge, you can feel the textured river stone underfoot while glacial spray chills the air and the roar of whitewater reverberates off sheer rock faces. Hidden deeper in the dense undergrowth lie overgrown World War II concrete pillboxes housing heavy artillery pieces, their iron barrels quietly rusting into the forest floor. The atmosphere is dense with the aroma of damp boxwood and wild hazelnut, transporting trekkers through centuries of fortified alpine history.
