Chalaadi Glacier

Mestia, Georgia

Tucked beneath the sheer, 4,412-meter granite face of Mount Chatyn-Tau, the Chalaadi Glacier descends deep into Svaneti’s ancient alpine realm. Revered in indigenous folklore as the icy sanctuary of Dali—the mountain goddess of the hunt—this dynamic valley glacier captured international attention when British mountaineer Douglas Freshfield traversed the Central Caucasus in 1868. Russian Imperial topographers began systematically measuring the ice tongue in the late 1890s, transforming the site into an open-air laboratory. Today, Chalaadi serves as a poignant barometer of global climate shifts, having dramatically receded hundreds of meters up the gorge over the past century. The approach begins along a narrow wooden suspension bridge swaying over the silt-laden torrent of the Mestiachala River, leading through primeval birch groves before terminating in a colossal amphitheater of raw granite debris. Standing at the foot of the jagged ice snout, travelers encounter a dramatic sensory threshold: the ambient alpine warmth instantly collapses under freezing katabatic winds roaring down from the upper icefalls. The glacier’s exposed core glows in stark veins of cobalt-blue and ash-grey, fissured by deep crevasses that constantly groan, calve, and drop loose moraine into the foaming meltwater churning straight from the cavernous ice cave below.
