Ushguli Village

Mestia, Georgia

Perched at 2,100 meters beneath the glacial precipice of Mount Shkhara, Ushguli comprises four medieval hamlets—Zhibiani, Chvibiani, Chazhashi, and Murqmeli—anchored in the Enguri Gorge. Flourishing during the Georgian Golden Age between the 9th and 12th centuries, this high-altitude bastion served as a remote treasury and summer retreat traditionally associated with Queen Tamar. The visual identity of the settlement rests upon dozens of defensive stone towers, or *koshki*, constructed from dry-stacked slate and river schist. Rising three to five stories, these tapered monoliths feature machicolated battlements and narrow arrow slits, engineered to withstand both blood feuds and winter avalanches. Stepping into Ushguli's mud-and-cobblestone alleys places travelers within an austere, windswept fortress where farm life and medieval architecture intertwine. Svan cattle wander between centuries-old *machubi* (stone communal houses), beneath a canopy of woodsmoke and thin, subalpine air. At the village’s highest ridge stands the 10th-century Lamaria Church, a fortress-chapel ringed by a low defensive wall. Pushing past its heavy wooden portal reveals an intimate, barrel-vaulted interior illuminated by slivers of daylight, where flaking 12th-century frescoes of the Virgin Mary and St. George survive against soot-blackened stone. Outside, the absolute quiet of the Caucasus is pierced only by the thundering rush of the glacial river below.
