Zagreb
Zagreb sits between the slopes of Mount Medvednica and the northern bank of the Sava River, firmly rooted in Central European culture rather than the coastal Adriatic. Walking its streets feels leisurely and grounded, as broad Austro-Hungarian boulevards give way to cobbled medieval alleys connected by shaded stairways and a historic funicular. Gas lanterns are still ignited by hand at dusk along the Upper Town, casting an amber glow over a capital built on an accessible, human scale. The city evolved from two rival medieval settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, which formally united in 1850. In Gradec, St. Mark’s Church anchors the government quarter with its distinctive 1880 tiled roof displaying historical coats of arms, while the thirteenth-century Lotrščak Tower fires the Grič cannon each day at noon. Eastward across the ridge stands Zagreb Cathedral, rebuilt in neo-Gothic splendor after the catastrophic 1880 earthquake. Southward, the Lower Town unfolds across the Green Horseshoe, a linked chain of eight landscaped squares and parks conceived in the late nineteenth century. Daily life unfolds outdoors around culinary traditions and extended coffee breaks. Dolac Market fills each morning beneath red parasols with farmers selling cottage cheese, sour cream, and orchard fruit, often followed by a slice of warm baked strukli pastry in a neighboring tavern. On Saturdays, locals gather for spica, dressing up to drink espresso along Bogoviceva Street. Spring and early autumn offer the best weather for wandering, and the city’s vintage blue tram network connects the main quarters quickly and reliably.
