Kampong Ayer

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

Antonio Pigafetta, chronicler of Ferdinand Magellan’s 1521 expedition, famously dubbed this sprawling riverine settlement the Venice of the East. Inhabited continuously for over a millennium, Kampong Ayer functioned as the political and economic heart of the Bruneian Sultanate throughout its maritime golden age in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Today, dozens of distinct sub-villages remain elevated on mangrove hardwood and reinforced concrete pilings driven deep into the Brunei River's muddy bed. Weatherboard homes washed in seafoam green, ochre, and periwinkle flank miles of interconnected footbridges, linked alongside aquatic fire stations, schools, and the distinctive turquoise domes and minarets of stilt-mounted mosques. Access begins aboard low-slung, roaring wooden water taxis known as penambang that carve through brackish river spray from the capital's waterfront. Stepping onto the raised timber boardwalks, travelers encounter a kinetic balance of maritime heritage and domestic comfort. The air carries the sharp tang of tidal mud mingled with the scent of fried banana fritters drifting from open kitchen windows. Potted bougainvillea cascades over wooden railings, cats nap on shaded verandas, and overhead electric conduits hum beneath tropical skies as school children dash fearlessly across footpaths suspended meters above the churning brown water.
