Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

Rising above an artificial lagoon on the banks of the Brunei River, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque stands as a masterwork of Mughal elegance and Italian neoclassical craftsmanship. Commissioned by the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Omar Ali Saifuddien III, and completed in 1958, the sanctuary was designed by Italian architect and sculptor Rudolfo Nolli to symbolize the nation’s Islamic devotion. Its profile is defined by a soaring 52-meter minaret and a monumental central dome sheathed entirely in 24-carat gold leaf, casting a brilliant metallic glow over the water. Anchored directly in the lagoon sits the Mahligai, a stone replica of a 16th-century royal ceremonial barge connected to the main complex by a graceful marble causeway. Approaching the prayer hall, visitors cross sun-warmed courtyards before stepping onto the cool, polished expanses of imported Italian Carrara marble. The interior hushes the tropical heat beneath soaring stained-glass arches crafted in England, crystal chandeliers, and thick Saudi Arabian carpets. When dusk settles over Bandar Seri Begawan, the call to prayer echoes outward toward the neighboring water village of Kampong Ayer, and floodlights illuminate the golden dome, turning the surrounding lagoon into a mirror of radiant Islamic artistry.
