Erawan National Park

Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Gazetted in 1975 as Thailand’s twelfth national park, this 550-square-kilometer sanctuary in the Tenasserim Hills draws its name from Hindu cosmology: the uppermost tier of its central waterfall bears an uncanny likeness to Erawan (Airavata), the three-headed white elephant mount of the god Indra. Over a 1.5-kilometer jungle ascent, the stream cascades across seven distinct tiers of pale, calcified limestone shelves and rounded travertine ledges. High concentrations of dissolved calcium carbonate scatter sunlight to tint the plunging waters with luminous shades of turquoise, emerald, and milky cerulean, contrasting sharply with the deep-green canopy of mixed deciduous and bamboo forest. Ascending the trail, travelers swap humid tropical air for cool, drifting spray as the forest quiet gives way to the rhythmic roar of plunging water and the sharp call of cicadas. Wading into the lower basin of Tier 2, Wang Macha, visitors feel the immediate shock of brisk, mineral-rich mountain water, quickly followed by the curious, prickling sensation of indigenous *Garra rufa*—doctor fish—nibbling gently at bare legs and toes. Continuing higher toward the rugged limestone amphitheaters of tiers six and seven, hikers scramble over slick roots and wooden footbridges, bathed in damp mist and dappled sunlight that cuts through the wild jungle canopy.
