Tehran, Iran

Deep beneath Tehran’s bustling Ferdowsi Avenue, behind the massive, blast-proof vault doors of the Central Bank of Iran, lies a staggering dynastic hoard accumulated over half a millennium. The treasury preserves the spoils of Persian power, anchored by the legendary plunder brought back from Delhi by Nader Shah Afshar following his 1739 campaign, alongside centuries of royal acquisitions by Safavid, Qajar, and Pahlavi rulers. Passing through strict security, travelers step into a heavily guarded, chilled subterranean chamber where ambient darkness gives way to the blinding refraction of tens of thousands of uncut jewels and ceremonial regalia. Inside, display cases gleam with masterworks of imperial iconography. The unrivaled centerpiece is the Daria-i-Noor, a flawless 182-carat pale pink diamond—one of the largest cut diamonds in existence—suspended in a frame crowned by the Persian lion and sun. Nearby looms the 1869 Jewel-Studded Globe, commissioned by Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, which maps the world across fifty-one thousand gems, with oceans sculpted from emeralds and landmasses rendered in rubies. Gazing upon the gold-paneled Naderi Throne and the pearl-encrusted Pahlavi Crown, visitors experience an overwhelming sensory encounter with imperial ambition, surrounded by heaps of loose emeralds, spinels, and Persian Gulf pearls displayed like glittering mounds of sand.
