Algeti National Park
Cloaking the southern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge just southwest of Tbilisi, Algeti was designated as a protected reserve in 1965 to shelter the easternmost pockets of relict Caucasian fir and Oriental spruce. The landscape is shadowed by medieval history, adjoining the Didgori battlefields where King David the Builder achieved his decisive 1121 victory against Seljuk forces. Anchoring the park’s cultural heritage is the adjacent fifth-century Manglisi Sioni Cathedral, an ancient basilica overhauled in 1002 with intricate stone relief carvings, an octagonal central dome, and faded Byzantine-style frescoes that echo the endurance of Georgia's early Christian frontier. Navigating the trails that flank the Algeti River gorge, travelers enter a cool, sun-dappled canopy where the sharp aroma of pine resin mingles with damp moss and wild thyme. Craggy limestone bluffs and volcanic rock formations puncture the dense woodlands, leading hikers along ridgelines that peak at over 2,000 meters toward the ruined stone ramparts of medieval Kldekari Fortress. Standing along these windswept precipices, visitors are met with absolute stillness, broken only by the flight of raptors soaring above the plunging gorges of the Kvemo Kartli plateau below.
