Markhal Resort
Cradled deep within the forested defile of the Kish river valley, where Silk Road caravans once skirted the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, this mountain enclave reimagines a mid-20th-century Soviet health retreat into a contemporary Caucasian alpine sanctuary. Inaugurated in its grand stone-and-glass incarnation in 2017, the estate reflects regional vernacular craftsmanship on a monumental scale. Hewn river rock, warm terracotta masonry, and dark timber gables pay homage to Shaki’s traditional architectural vernacular. The sweeping grounds center on an expansive multi-story lodge of more than 170 rooms, complemented by a perimeter of detached two-story cottages angled toward the craggy forested ridgelines that once guarded the nearby medieval fortress of Gelersen-Gorersen. Stepping onto the terraced flagstones, travelers leave the arid plains behind for crisp, sub-alpine air scented with damp moss, wild mint, and ancient hornbeam groves. The quiet rustle of dense beech canopies is punctuated by the steady rush of mountain streams funneled into carved stone rills throughout the courtyards. Inside, vaulted corridors lead to subterranean halotherapy salt caves and domed marble *hamams*, while floor-to-ceiling panoramic salons capture the shifting mists clinging to the ravine. At dusk, cast-iron braziers and amber lanterns flicker against the dark timber eaves, inviting visitors to sit with steaming cups of local wild-thyme tea as cool mountain drafts settle across the gorge.
