Tortuga Bay

Puerto Ayora, Ecuador

Reached via an exacting 2.5-kilometer basalt flagstone path cutting through the arid brush of Santa Cruz, Tortuga Bay preserves the primeval landscape that captured Charles Darwin during the 1835 voyage of HMS *Beagle*. Strictly protected under the mandate of the Galápagos National Park established in 1959, this pristine littoral zone serves as a vital sanctuary for the East Pacific green sea turtle (*Chelonia mydas*), whose nocturnal nesting rituals have shaped the shifting topography of its high coastal dunes between January and May for millennia. Beyond the dry woodland of towering *Opuntia* and endemic candelabra cacti, the trail opens onto the blinding white expanse of Playa Brava, where powdery, pulverized coral sand meets the crashing turquoise swells of the Pacific. Jet-black marine iguanas (*Amblyrhynchus cristatus*) carpet the dark volcanic outcroppings, snorting vaporized salt into the humid air alongside red-orange Sally Lightfoot crabs. Following the sweeping arc of the beach west past a labyrinth of red mangroves reveals Playa Mansa, a sheltered, glassine lagoon. Here, the ocean's fury vanishes; visitors wade into transparent, jade-colored shallows where juvenile whitetip reef sharks cut silently through the current and shadow-like sea turtles glide inches above the rippled seabed.
