Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Monteverde, Costa Rica

In 1951, a community of Quaker pacifists from Alabama settled in Costa Rica’s Cordillera de Tilarán, seeking sanctuary from the military draft during the Korean War. Realizing that clearing the misty ridges for dairy pastures would destroy the mountain watersheds that fed the valley below, they set aside critical highland tracts for conservation. In October 1972, visiting biologist George Powell joined forces with Quaker leader Wilford Guindon and the Tropical Science Center to officially establish the reserve on an initial 328 hectares, institutionalizing a pioneering model of community-driven tropical preservation that now safeguards over 10,500 hectares. Straddling the spine of the Continental Divide, the forest is perpetually bathed in dense, orographic mist driven by Caribbean trade winds. Walking along the compacted trails and narrow suspension bridges swinging high over deep ravines, you step into an intensely saturated vertical ecosystem. Colossal trees draped in thick coats of moss, bromeliads, and hanging lianas support over 500 orchid species—the highest diversity on Earth. The air feels cool, heavy, and alive with moisture; the visual palette shifts between deep jade foliage and blinding white fog, while the eerie, anvil-like chime of the three-wattled bellbird echoes above the understory, occasionally punctuated by the iridescent crimson and emerald flash of a resplendent quetzal slicing through the canopy.
