El Capitolio

Havana, Cuba

Commissioned under dictator Gerardo Machado and completed in 1929, Havana’s El Capitolio stands as a monumental triumph of Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts design. Architect Eugenio Rayneri Piedra drew inspiration from both the Panthéon in Paris and the United States Capitol, crowning the pale Capellanía limestone edifice with a soaring dome that rises nearly 92 meters into the tropical sky. Prior to the 1959 Cuban Revolution, these gilded chambers housed the nation's bicameral congress; today, following a meticulous decadelong restoration, the palace once again serves as the seat of the National Assembly of People's Power. Mounting the sweeping exterior granite staircase, past colossal bronze figures representing Work and Virtue, travelers step directly into the cavernous Salón de los Pasos Perdidos (Hall of Lost Steps). Polished marble floors mirror the glow of lampposts and lead toward Angelo Zanelli’s colossal *Statue of the Republic*—a 15-meter bronze goddess draped in gold leaf that dominates the central rotunda. Embedded in the floor directly beneath the cupola rests a gleaming replica of the historic 25-carat diamond marking Cuba’s official Kilómetro Cero. The echo of footsteps and the cool, shadowed air offer sharp relief from the Caribbean sun, framing panoramic views out toward the rumbling parade of candy-colored 1950s sedans along the bustling Paseo del Prado.
