Lencois Maranhenses National Park

Barreirinhas, Brazil

Established by presidential decree under João Figueiredo in June 1981, Lençóis Maranhenses protects a remarkable 155,000-hectare geomorphological anomaly where the Amazon basin converges with the Atlantic coast. Over thousands of years, the Parnaíba and Preguiças rivers washed inland sediment toward the ocean, where powerful currents and equatorial trade winds forced the quartz grains back ashore to sculpt massive, undulating barchan dunes. Hidden within this shifting sea of bleached silica, traditional *ribeirinho* communities—descendants of regional indigenous and mixed-heritage settlers—have long structured their nomadic fishing rhythms around the park’s biannual cycle of torrential equatorial rains and desert-like droughts. Between June and September, the park unveils its defining visual paradox: thousands of ephemeral rainwater lagoons, saturated in hues of translucent turquoise and deep bottle-green, pool within the dune valleys over an impermeable layer of underground rock. Standing atop the crest of Lagoa Bonita, travelers feel relentless coastal gusts whip fine sand against their ankles while looking out over an optical illusion of endless rolling white sheets—the literal translation of *lençóis*. The experience culminates in a sensory shock: walking across the sun-baked silica and plunging straight down the slip face into deep, startlingly cool freshwater, swimming alongside dormant killifish that awaken only during these flooded, sunlit months.
