Kawasan Falls

Cebu City, Philippines

Tucked deep within the rugged karst gorges of Badian southwest of Cebu City, Kawasan Falls owes its existence to the spring-fed Matutinao River flowing down from the Mantalongon mountain range. For generations of southern Cebuano communities, this dense jungle corridor provided a vital freshwater source, later integrated into early regional green energy when the Matutinao Mini-Hydro Plant began quietly harnessing the river’s drop in the late 20th century. Visually, the cascade unfolds across three distinct tiers framed by towering stands of wild bamboo and giant ferns. High concentrations of dissolved calcium carbonate perpetually dye the river an electric, milky cyan, spilling violently over a sheer 40-meter limestone face into broad, emerald-fringed travertine pools. Standing at the base of the primary tier, travelers are enveloped by a percussive roar as thousands of gallons of mountain runoff slam into the basin, casting a cool, mineral-rich vapor that instantly cuts through the humid equatorial heat. The water offers a bracing, bone-chilling plunge, where swimmers navigate buoyant currents alongside submerged limestone shelves polished smooth by millenniums of hydraulic pressure. Upstream along the canyon, adventurers leap from sheer natural rock parapets into deep slot pools, floating beneath vine-draped rock ceilings that block the tropical sun and reveal the raw, unadorned geology of southern Cebu.
