Petaling Street

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Rising from the ashes of the Selangor Civil War in the 1870s, this historic corridor earned its Cantonese moniker, *Chee Cheong Kai* (Starch Factory Street), when Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy established a tapioca mill here to employ displaced tin miners. Towering red-and-gold *paifang* entrance gates, flanked by imperial stone lions and coiling dragons, frame a dense spine of pre-war Straits Eclectic shophouses. These two-storey heritage façades still showcase their original neoclassical pilasters, weathered timber-louvred shutters, and shaded "five-foot ways" designed to shelter pedestrians from tropical deluges. Stepping onto the stone-paved boulevard, travelers are immediately enveloped by a green-tinted twilight beneath the "Green Dragon," a soaring translucent barrel-vault canopy installed in 2003 to shield the market. Beneath endless canopies of glowing crimson lanterns, the air hangs thick with the sweet smoke of chestnuts roasting in blackened sand, star anise from bubbling vats of beef noodle broth, and the fiery breath of street-side woks. Navigating the labyrinth of stalls piled high with watches, silks, and tea sets, one encounters the rapid-fire cadence of bargaining in Cantonese and Malay, punctuated by drifting sandalwood smoke from nearby century-old clan associations tucked behind the commercial sprawl.
