Mount of Temptation

Jericho, Palestine

Thrusting 350 meters above the sunken floor of the Jordan Valley, the sheer limestone bluffs of Mount of Temptation (Jabal al-Quruntul) anchor the Gospel narrative of Christ’s forty-day fast and trial by the Devil. Clinging precariously to the vertical precipice is the Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Temptation, engineered in 1895 around the subterranean grottos first inhabited by fourth-century Byzantine hermits under Saint Chariton. The monastery’s fortified ochre ramparts, crenellated stone balconies, and narrow arched arcades fuse directly into the striated cliff face, suspended dramatically between arid earth and sky above the ancient oasis of Jericho. Approaching the sanctuary via a gliding cable car or the arduous, switchbacking footpath, visitors immediately transition from the baking desert heat into the shadowed, cool stillness of chambers hewn straight from living rock. Inside the central chapel, the scent of burning frankincense mingles with damp stone as beeswax tapers illuminate gilded Byzantine-style frescoes, a carved wooden iconostasis, and the venerated rock outcropping where tradition holds Jesus sat in meditation. Stepping out onto the dizzying cantilevered terrace, a dry wind rises from the valley basin, unveiling an unmatched panorama that stretches across the emerald date-palm groves of Tell es-Sultan to the silver sheen of the Dead Sea and the distant, sun-bleached mountains of Jordan.
