Bimmah Sinkhole

Muscat, Oman

Known locally as *Hawiyat Najm*—the "Falling Star"—this dramatic limestone crater formed through millennia of karst dissolution, though Omani folklore long attributed its sheer, 20-meter drop to the impact of a rogue celestial meteorite. Preserved within a coastal park along the sun-scoured plains of Muscat Governorate, the geological depression spans roughly 50 by 70 meters. Subterranean tunnels invisibly link its basin to the nearby Gulf of Oman, mingling freshwater mountain runoff with the sea to create a hyper-pigmented pool of iridescent turquoise and deep lapis, ringed by sheer, stratified walls of crumbly, sun-bleached rock. Approaching the rim, you are confronted by a sudden, surreal rift in the arid desert plateau, where the dry heat gives way to cool, briny drafts rising from the depths. A steep concrete staircase descends directly to the water’s edge, funneling you down into the cavern’s sheltered shadows. Wading into the crystal-clear shallows onto submerged limestone shelves, wild *Garra rufa*—nibble fish—instantly gather around bare ankles, providing a natural spa treatment before you swim out into the center. Floating in the buoyant, brackish water, the view looks straight up at overhanging cliff ledges framing an unbroken vault of Arabian sky.
