Savalan Valley

Gabala, Azerbaijan

Framed by the snow-dusted ridges of the Greater Caucasus, the Savalan Valley carries a viticultural lineage rooted in the ancient Kingdom of Caucasian Albania, where archaeologists have unearthed millennia-old clay *kyupi* amphorae buried beneath the alluvial soil. In 2007, this dormant legacy was systematically revived through the establishment of the ASPI Winery, developed in partnership with Italian enologists Daniel D’Andrea and Andrea Dal Cin. Today, roughly 350 hectares of precision-trellised European varietals ripple across a sheltered river terrace 400 meters above sea level, sloping toward the Turyanchay River basin. At the heart of the estate stands an expansive, terracotta-tiled cantina whose subterranean cellar shelters hundreds of toasted French Radoux oak barriques alongside an archaeological collection of local Bronze Age pottery. Visitors stepping onto the estate’s limestone observation terrace encounter a sharp mountain breeze laden with the mineral scent of clay loam and fermenting grape skins. In the vaulted tasting pavilion, floor-to-ceiling windows look straight out toward Mount Tufandag as guests sample aromatic whites like Traminer and deep, peppered Syrah poured into crystal stemware. The on-site museum contextualizes each glass with displays of excavated medieval pruning hooks and glazed Albanian earthen vessels discovered on the estate grounds. Walking the perimeter of the ripening rows, travelers feel the cool alpine air descend from the peaks, witnessing how Old World European cellarcraft has taken firm, dramatic root in the Azerbaijani highlands.
