Tsey Gorge

Vladikavkaz, Russia

Carved deep into the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus roughly ninety kilometers southwest of Vladikavkaz, Tsey Gorge shelters the sacred heartland of medieval Alanian mythology. Its cultural nucleus is Rekom, a fourteenth-century pagan-Christian sanctuary constructed entirely from notched pine logs joined without iron nails. Dedicated to Uastyrdzhi—the Alanian patron of travelers and warriors later syncretized with Saint George—the shrine’s low-slung, shingled perimeter is adorned with carved animal totems and hundreds of sun-bleached ibex horns accumulated over centuries of ritual sacrifice. Towering above the tree line directly opposite the shrine, the sheer granite precipice of Mount Monk looms like a stern, hooded sentinel carved by glacial erosion. Stepping along the frost-scoured bed of the Tseydon River, travelers encounter a landscape governed by the Skazsky and Tsey glaciers descending directly from the four-thousand-meter massif of Mount Uilpata. A sharp drop in temperature accompanies every step toward the terminal moraines, where biting katabatic winds carry the mineral tang of pulverized slate and crushed juniper. Walking beneath the fluttering fabric of prayer ribbons tied to relict birch branches, visitors stand before massive electric-blue seracs, surrounded by the deafening roar of subglacial meltwater cutting through ancient bedrock.
