Pride of Muslims Mosque, Shali
Unveiled in August 2019 after seven years of construction, the Pride of Muslims Mosque in Shali, situated just southeast of Grozny, stands as Europe’s largest Islamic sanctuary. Designed by Uzbek architect Abdukakhar Turdiev, the monument merges neoclassical proportions with traditional Central Asian motifs, cloaked entirely in pure white Thassos marble imported from Greece. Four pencil-thin minarets rise 63 meters into the North Caucasus sky, anchoring a 43-meter central dome. The surrounding estate functions as an open-air Persian-style paradise garden, spanning over forty acres with twelve tiers of cascading fountains and tens of thousands of cultivated rose bushes designed to accommodate crowds upwards of 70,000 worshippers during Friday prayers. Stepping through the massive carved-wood portals, visitors encounter a cool, luminous interior dominated by an eight-ton, eight-meter-wide lotus chandelier encrusted with Swarovski crystals and accented in 24-karat gold leaf. The cavernous prayer hall, capable of sheltering 30,000 people, is lined with custom-loomed turquoise carpets that mirror the intricate floral frescoes and gilded Arabic calligraphy winding up the perimeter arches. Standing beneath the soaring vault, travelers experience an echoing stillness despite the immense scale, bathed in soft prism-refracted light that filters through arched stained-glass windows while the faint aroma of rosewater and mountain breezes drifts in from the manicured esplanade outside.
