Ushkaloy Towers

Grozny, Russia

Clinging impossibly to a recessed limestone hollow beneath the overhang of Mount Selin-Lam, the 12th-century Ushkaloy Twin Towers guard the narrowest defile of the Argun Gorge south of Grozny. Superb artifacts of medieval Nakh defensive architecture, these four-story stone sentinels controlled the vital passage connecting the northern Caucasian plains with Georgia. The builders engineered the towers directly into the mountain’s shelter, utilizing the sheer cliff face as both the rear wall and protective stone canopy. Narrow embrasures and defensive machicolations punctuate the rough-hewn slate and shale masonry. Following the ruin of the northern tower during the conflicts of 1944 and 2001, local craftsmen undertook an authentic, mortarless stone restoration in 2011 to revive the pair's ancestral silhouette. Crossing the modern timber-and-steel footbridge toward the base, visitors are immediately confronted by the thunderous roar of the Chanty-Argun River surging through the abyss below. The towers loom twelve meters high, their charcoal and buff stone blocks blending seamlessly into the mountain's striated rock face. In the perpetual shadow cast by the rock shelf, the mountain air remains sharply cool and mineral-scented. Gazing upward through the ancient arrow slits toward the cavernous overhang, one feels the claustrophobic precision of medieval sentry life, where solitary guards once scanned the canyon floor for approaching cavalry amid the unrelenting mountain spray.
