Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia

Founded in 1846 along the sloping banks of the Yarra River by Lieutenant-Governor Charles La Trobe, this 38-hectare botanical sanctuary owes its romantic aesthetic to visionary director William Guilfoyle. Assuming control in 1873, Guilfoyle dismantled the rigid, utilitarian classification grids favored by his predecessor, botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, in favor of the sweeping curves, dramatic sightlines, and layered foliage of the Victorian Picturesque style. Today, the grounds harmonize colonial botanical ambition with ancient Wurundjeri and Bunurong heritage, sheltering more than 8,500 plant species from across the globe beneath towering canopies of native kauri pines and English oaks. Wandering the labyrinth of contoured paths, visitors move between startlingly varied microclimates. One moment delivers the humid, shadowed chill of the Fern Gully, where cascading fronds and mossy trunks filter the sunlight, and the next reveals the arid crest of Guilfoyle’s Volcano, an 1876 circular brick water reservoir reimagined with sculptural succulents and desert cacti. Down along the willow-draped shores of the Ornamental Lake, black swans drift past wooden punts propelled by traditional polers. Standing on the sweeping lawns, visitors are immersed in the scent of crushed eucalyptus and damp earth, listening to the resonant chiming of bellbirds while modern skyscrapers shimmer through gaps in the emerald canopy.
