Partisan Glade
Perched at an elevation of 1,600 meters beneath the sheer limestone cliffs of the Kamennoe More ridge south of Maykop, this sweeping mountain clearing holds a resolute chapter of the 1942–1943 Battle of the Caucasus. Fringed by dense stands of Caucasian fir and beech, the meadow served as a clandestine high-altitude redoubt and weapons cache for regional Soviet partisan detachments—including the "For the Motherland" brigade—who disrupted Nazi *Gebirgsjäger* operations across the strategic mountain passes. A simple stone memorial marker rests in the tall grass, commemorating the guerrilla fighters who endured brutal subalpine winters while defending the trails toward the Black Sea. Standing at the clearing’s perimeter, visitors are confronted by the immense, pale-grey precipices of Mount Oshiten rising abruptly against the open sky. A dark, spring-fed tarn rests near the meadow’s center, its glasslike surface mirroring the jagged rock faces and scudding mountain mist. Travelers breathing the cool, resin-scented air encounter a poignant juxtaposition: the profound silence of untouched subalpine wilderness alongside rustic wooden shelters and panoramic outlooks that gaze down into the deep, forested folds of the Belaya River canyon.
