Teberda Nature Reserve

Dombay, Russia

Established in January 1935 to safeguard the fragile high-altitude ecosystems of the Greater Caucasus, the Teberda Nature Reserve encompasses ancient transit corridors once dominated by the medieval Kingdom of Alania. Traces of this Byzantine-aligned frontier still watch over the northern perimeter, where 10th-century sandstone basilicas like Sentinsky Church crown precipitous mountain spurs above the lower river valleys. By the mid-20th century, Soviet glaciologists and pioneering alpinists transformed the Dombay basin into an epicenter of mountain exploration, charting more than one hundred glacial cirques and the formidable granite walls framing the Caucasus divide. Trekking beneath the soaring bulk of Mount Belalakaya, travelers witness its defining geological signature: alternating horizontal bands of white quartz slicing through sheer, dark gneiss cliffs. The trail through the Amanauz Canyon reverberates with the thunderous roar of glacial meltwater cascading into narrow chasms, cooling the air with a perennially icy mist. Across the subalpine shelf, dense stands of silver-barked birch and Caucasian fir yield to moraine plateaus harboring the Baduk Lakes, where glacial waters shift from deep jade to crystalline turquoise. Standing beside these frigid shorelines, visitors breathe in the sharp scent of damp shale and resinous pine while scanning the crags for West Caucasian turs poised along the razor-thin ridgelines.
