Aushiger Hot Springs

Nalchik, Russia

Deep in the Cherek River valley, the thermal waters of Aushiger owe their modern existence to a 1950 Soviet geological expedition that struck an artesian spring instead of petroleum. Drilling down into Mesozoic strata at Well No. 1, prospectors unexpectedly unsealed a pressurized subterranean reservoir surging from depths exceeding 4,000 meters. Today, the site retains an unvarnished post-Soviet balneological architecture: broad, stepped concrete pools fed directly by calcified iron pipes, bordered by utilitarian blue-framed pavilions and low-slung stone bathhouses set against the rolling foothills of the Lesisty Range. Stepping into the main outdoor basin, bathers plunge into pale turquoise, slightly alkaline water emerging at a blistering 48°C to 50°C. Dense plumes of sulfur- and nitrogen-tinged steam billow across the surface, transforming the open expanse into an ethereal fog chamber—a sensation intensified when sub-zero mountain air dusts the surrounding concrete terraces with winter frost. The water feels noticeably heavy and slick with dissolved silica, imparting a buoyant warmth to the skin while weary limbs settle against submerged tile ledges. In the stillness, visitors listen to the steady hiss of scalding subterranean torrents, gazing through the vapor at the rugged, pine-lined horizon of Kabardino-Balkaria.
