Tower of Concord

Magas, Russia

Soaring one hundred meters above the Sunzha River valley, the Tower of Concord anchors Magas, Ingushetia’s purpose-built capital. Completed in 2013, this colossal stone structure serves as a monumental resurrection of the medieval Vainakh battle towers that have fortified the Caucasus gorges since the thirteenth century. Scaled to precisely four times the height of its ancestral prototypes, the tower tapers dramatically from a broad limestone base toward a traditional four-stepped pyramidal roof crowned with dark slate, complete with overhanging machicolation balconies. Its interior serves as a cultural pantheon, housing a museum filled with intricate bronze-age artifacts, woven felt *isting* tapestries, and epic murals illustrating the mythic Nart sagas. Rather than climbing a conventional staircase, visitors ascend along a sweeping, 1.7-kilometer spiral ramp that wraps continuously around the hollow inner perimeter. The steady incline creates a meditative journey through Ingush ethnography, passing warrior chainmail, antique weaponry, and regional paintings at every turn. The climb culminates eighty-five meters in the air at an external, fully transparent glass observation platform. Stepping onto this sheer precipice delivers a sudden pulse of adrenaline; beneath your boots lies an unobstructed vertical drop, while the horizon unfolds into a panorama stretching over the geometric avenues of Magas to the snow-capped crests of the Greater Caucasus.
